Why are there two pipes in this picture?
Author: PlumbChick32 (WA)

Water meter towards the left. House towards the right. I can't figure out why there are two lines heading in the direction of the house. I also can't figure out what that electrical cable is. There is a meter box upstream (to the left). I don't have an irrigation system. Any ideas?

That is an odd setup to me, maybe you can ask the water dept meter-reader guy about it or check your water bill for any notation about the type of service? Have you lived there very long, perhaps there was a sprinkler system at one time. It looks as if someone added this in-ground box, cut the main water supply line for the house to add the tee and another line from the tee going somewhere, plus added a shutoff valve to that second line.

Is there a guest house in the back yard, or a fountain display, something outside the home that would use water? There is a shutoff valve in the center-right area of box in photo, you could shut it off and see what no longer gets water supplied to it. Maybe you can scoop most of the water out of the box with a plastic cup and see more detail, especially where those electrical cables connect. Is your water meter one that can be remotely read electronically? If those water lines are plastic the electrical cable may have been buried with the water line so that the line can be located from above ground by those "Call us before you dig" services.

Shut the valve. Set up a camera. And watch for your neighbor to come out and check on it. smiling smiley
