The toilet keeps backing up as well as the tub. The water comes back up through the drain in the tub, while the toilet backs up at the same time. The water is filthy and doesn't smell too good. My questions are what's the cause, and how do I fix it? The water will eventually go back down, but after awhile the process will start all over again. I tried drain cleaner in the tub, and some toilet drain cleaner but with little success. Getting fustrated trying to figure what the problem could be. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

you have an almost total major drain stoppage.
you can go to a tool rental center and get a drain cleaning machine to clear the blockage yourself or you can (recommended) call a drain cleaning company..

Thank you, I think I'm going to call a drain cleaning service as you suggested. Best to leave it to someone who knows what they are doing. Thank you again.

Is this a private house or apartment rental. Yes, as stated, you have a major blockage in your waste/sewer line. Chemicals will have no affect. Take the empty containers back and get your money refunded. Your sewer line has to be cleared using the properly sized cable/head. Make sure you wear the proper protection as you have added harmful chemicals to your waste line.
Best Wishes
