How to fix 1/2 inch gap between shower drain pipe and flange?
Author: danielvaz23 (FL)

Hi,

I moved into a new place and when trying to unclog the shower drain, I found that the drain pipe is not touching the flange, there is about 1/2 inch gap. I am now concerned that water has been leaking into the house's foundation.

See photo: [www.amazon.com]

Any thoughts on how to fix? Thanks!

Here it is.

It appears that you need to glue a 2" X 1 1/2" bushing up into the shower drain, and then glue the trap riser into the bushing.

I assume this shower is on a concrete slab floor. If so, then you may be "screwed" because there is no way to put an 'extension' on that riser so it enters the drain so that you can install the rubber gasket around it.

To me it looks like the riser was suppose to be glued to the drain and wasn't. The trap/riser dropped down out of the drain. I would take a hooked metal rod, drop it into the drain and see if the trap can be lifted up. If it can, the outside of the pipe and inside of the drain flange needs to be cleaned really well, primed, glued and then lift the trap up into the drain flange until the glue sets.

Thanks everyone for the quick reply!

Would you have a link to the type of bushing I would use? I searched online and came up with many different options (sorry, I'm not a plumber but willing to learn and try).

Also, this is on marble floor laid on top of what I believe is a concrete slab.

I'll try the last suggestion of moving the pipe with a metal hook, just need to find something that will fit the pipe.

hook down the inside of the pipe.
it can be decent size and shaped like a golf club putter.

It appears to be a 2" drain pipe, so it comes down to getting it glued back into the drain body.

It doesn't look like there's water in the "trap"...hmmmm

Ok, so I tried moving the drain pipe and no luck. It is very firm where it is. I've found this issue some time back and stopped using that shower until we find a solution which could explain why there's no water there. Wondering if when the marble floor got added, the floor got raised and they simply didn't bother making the proper connection? Looking like I may have to remove the flange and replace with a longer one so I can make the connection?

It's hard to tell how much room he has.

I wonder if a repair coupling (with stop) could be modified - cut the top half down so it leaves just enough area to glue but leaves maximum to add 2" extension riser to fit a bushing???

Or even cut the existing pipe from the inside with a Dremel or similar. Then add coupling (modified or not) and riser extension.

Would something like this work? Or is thefloor too thick for these "wings"?
