Toilet bolt is loose, no wobbling
Author: simplyguy (CA)

Hi,

My toilet has one loose bolt. I tried to tighten it up, but it looks like it was detached from the flange.
The weird thing is, it's not wobbly at all.

I called a plumber, he checked, he tried to rock it, no wobbling whatsoever, he said it's fine.

I am confused, I thought a toilet is secured to the floor via those two toilet bolts. If one is loose, it should wobble right? Could it be that the previous owner use different way to attach the toilet to the floor?

Any idea?

Thank you before.

Someone glued it to the floor.

I see. Is it common to use glue to secure a toilet?

Is it advisable that I have the loose bolt fixed?

if it isn't leaking and you are not getting a sewer smell, just use a wood screw with a washer. hoping there is good wood under the flange, just secure that side with the screw and washer..

A toilet usually doesn't wobble unless the floor underneath the bowl is uneven, especially tile. It does need to be repaired though.

The "glue" would be the caulking that's sealing the base to the floor.

The end/head of the bolt is still there under the hole in the toilet so a wood screw probably will not work.

it might work at an angle ?? after all, he is not screwing down a 2 x 4 to hold a wall. just snugging up a toilet..

Thank you all for your advice, I really appreciate it.

I tried to wiggle it and push it hard (the plumber did the same thing), the toilet wouldn't budge at all.

Regarding the bolt, I couldn't remove the bolt (even though it's very loose), I believe it's completely detached from the flange, but the head of the bolt is still intact (attached to the bolt).

That's why I am confused what secured the toilet so that it won't budge even with hard push.

Maybe I will try the wood screw.

Any other idea?

On a second thought...is it possible to re-hook the bolt to the flange?

The problem is I need to make the bolt's portion inside the toilet longer by adjusting the nut. But the nut is frozen even though I tried to spray it with WD-40.

more than likely, the slot for the bolt head is rusted away.
just put a wood screw and tighten it by hand firmly.

Thank you packy.
Any suggestion regarding the length and diameter of the wood screw?
