Hi, everyone,
I have a townhouse built in 2003. There is a device on the pipe between the water meter and the water heater tank with a tag from the water company which says the device needs to be replaced every 5 years. The picture is like this:

I would appreciate it very much if you could tell me what the device is and how much do I need to pay for replacing it.

Newbie here, but having run all my own water supplies I can say with a fair amount of certainty that its a dual check valve. Keeps water from flowing back into the mains and is a requirement for almost all new work (in my area). Its recommended that they are replaced every five years. I bought mine at grainger. Probably paid more than the pros do. I'm sure one of the pros will chime in soon and tell me if I'm right

strange.. there is a copper tee above the meter. above that is a pressure reducer. but you say the pipe going to the left feeds the water heater? so.. pressure reducer on cold to the house but not on the feed to the water heater?

I'd like to see a another picture showing where the pipe is going. There is part of a fitting showing at the top of that picture. The tag says non- potable water on the left side.

When water goes through a backflow preventer, it becomes "nonpotable water" on the outlet side.

A double check is NOT an approved BFP for a sprinkler/irrigation system. We would have to see where that pipe goes before making an assumption about what it does.

Thank you everyone! I have asked another picture and will post here when I get it. I have actually sent the image to a plumber who confirms that it is the dual check valve. He is going to replace it next week. I will keep this updated.
