Which applications call for a spring check versus a swing check?

If it is going into a vertical line, the a spring check is the only one that will work.

Yes sir. Installed a swing check on a vertical 1 1/4 water line coming in from the city. This check valve was supposed to stop back pressure into city water as booster pump cycled to bring the pressure up in the house system to 65 PSI from the city's 30-40 PSI. The swing check valve failed on the vertical (caused huge water hammer problem). Installed a spring check and it shut nice and quietly without any water hammer. So that same swing check installed on the horizontal would have been no problem? How loud is the actual shutting of the swing check because this home owner said the thumping sound was too much for him.
