Hey, can someone give me expert advice with regard to new bathtubs? Yanking my old cast-iron which is still almost perfect. Everything seems flimsy and doesn't compare to my 60-year-old cast-iron. Can get new cast-iron tub but it doesn't fit in the area. What is the best bet with the new material tubs for something of quality?

They don't make tubs as good now as they did 60 years ago. I normally use an American Standard Americast when replacing a drop in tub.

What does that mean? cast iron tubs are "modular" so if the old one fit, the new one should also.

i too am mystified as to why the new and the old tub just can't be swapped.
as hj says, they are the same.
a 5 foot long, 30 inch wide 14 inch deep tub is a standard measurement as old as dirt..

Your error may be that you are measuring from finished tub end wall to opposite finished tub end wall. This will give you a lesser measurement than the actual tub length dimension which is stud face to stud face-typically 60".

the last one i installed measures 4 feet 12 inches..

Mine was 4 feet 11 and 4/4 inches.

i can't help you on that. my plumbers tape measure doesn't have those 1/4 inch markings.
