 Sink wont drain
Author: bsmith11 (LA)

Let me start by saying I am no where close to a plumber so bare with me. I recently discovered that the metal pipe directly under my kitchen sink (leading to the plastic p-trap) was corroded and leaking. I replaced that pipe and the p-trap. Now the sink will not drain. The sink was draining properly before installation. I'm assuming I've got a vent issue somewhere, but I'm not sure how to approach it. Any help is appreciated.

Joining or merging tubular brass with plastic, can be challenging if you push too much of the brass into the plastic socket. A picture of your p-trap assembly posted here will help us to help you.

exactly as my friend from IL describes.
if the metal tailpiece is inserted too far into the inlet of the trap it can bottom out and severly restrict the flow. to fix it you will need to cut an inch or so off the tailpeice.
take the trap off and just hold it beside where it connects to see if that is the problem.

If you did not have a vent problem before you fixed the drain, you do NOT have one now. You probably misinstalled the trap or tailpiece.

Also, if the trap arm was replaced(pipe between the trap and the wall), there might have been gunk in the wall piping that has been dislodged and restricting the water flow. Remove the trap arm and look inside the wall pipe. The same "pipe too long" can apply to the trap arm, if it goes too far into the wall piping.

Maybe it needs to be snaked or try a plunger if something was dislodged in there. I have replaced the metal trap and always another pipe starts leaking, but never had this happen. Maybe incorrect size of trap or as he said maybe lots of gunk plugged it up.
