 Vapor lock?
Author: losealo13 (NH)

I have a split level home with a toilet below grade. For several years I was not able to locate the septic tank to have it pumped, so I capped off the downstairs toilet. Well, a couple of months ago I finally dug in the correct location and got the tank pumped. I finally decided to hook up the dowstairs toilet. When I removed the cap the water level was almost to the top of the 4 inch drain pipe. I tried hooking up the toilet anyways. Of course, it didn't flush. Took it back off and snaked the drain, nothing there. I don't know what to do. Please help! The water level didn't budge after snaking it. It does slowly go down in the bowl after flushing. It takes about 5 minutes to get back down to the proper level in the bowl after flushing. I'm at a loss.

Did the snake go all the way to the septic tank ? Either the pipe is clogged or it's back graded enough that the water won't drain out by gravity.

The snake went all the way into the tank. The tank is only about 4 feet away from the house and is buried roughly 55 inches under ground. The old toilet that we had worked pretty good for many years. We have replaced the toilet with a new one. It really seems like there must be some kind of vapor lock. Is it possible to fill a 1000 gallon tank in 8 months if the leach field has failed?

Easily....but if the field has failed, it should be a swamp.

Even if the leach field is 6 feet under ground?
