I am trying to replace my bathroom faucet. I disassembled the sink drain and there is a plastic insert inside the drain. What is it for? Can it be removed or should I leave it alone? Here is the pic:

That's a cultured marble sink and that plastic piece forms the drain and is molded in with the cultured marble. Don't remove it.

Sometimes there's enough plastic remaining that it obstructs the drain assembly, I just trim the excess with a sharp knife blade.

That's what I did too. I trimmed just the excess "lip" that was sticking out and left the rest alone. The drain stop fit much better after that.
Thank you!

My plastic piece that we are discussing is damaged. Can a new piece be purchases and if so, where? Or can regular replacement parts be used successfully?
