 Toilet Issue
Author: gunners14 (NY)

So I had been having an issue where the toilet (American Standard) would not shut off, assumed the issue was the fill valve. After taking the top of the tank off, I noticed that the float on the fill valve was not coming up with the water. Pulling the float up manually solved the issue. After flushing out the fill valve to try and remove and sediment that may have been causing the issue, the float now works properly. However, the tank no longer refills with water. But, if you take the fill valve and turn it ever so slightly, the tank will refill with water. Did this about 10 times and got the same result each time. Is the problem that the part itself is shot, or is there another reason why both of these functions won't work at the same time?

aq fluidmaster pro 45B has a brass shank in addition to heavier duty 'internals' and is well worth the few extra bucks - get one at an actual plumbing supply

The PRO45B is similar to the PRO45 with the exception of a heavy duty brass shank. The same design elements are incorporated which make for quiet operation but with the added strength of a brass shank which reduces the chance of cracking . This fill valve is also adjustable in height from 9-1/4" to 13-1/2". The PRO45B works great in applications where more strength is needed than the typical fill valve can provide.

$5 more than the 'standard' model found at the big box stores
