 Toilet overflows randomly
Author: kes (VA)

Our master bathroom toilet appears to overflow randomly. I have never seen or heard it happen but I will walk into the bathroom and the floor will be wet. It doesn't happen every day, but has happened 3 times this week (this is more than normal). When I find the wet floor the toilet is no longer running so it appears to stop on its own. It flushes normally. There is no sewage backup. The water appears clear. Any suggestions?

Are you sure it's from the toilet? When you see the wet floor, how's the water level in the bowl? By design, a toilet shouldn't overflow the bowl without a restricted drain. Is there a tub/shower in the room? Any chance there's a leak from the bottom of the toilet tank or from the supply valve/tube/hose?

I honestly have no clue! I just come in and the floor is very wet (like a pool of water). It doesn't leak all the time so I figured it it was from another location it would be a constant leak right? When I open the bowl the water level is normal and there is no standing water on the seat or rim of the bowl. I really don't see any location where the water would be coming from.

We do have a shower in the room, but the water is pooled around the toilet not the shower. I am about at the point where I want to set up a video camera so I can figure out what happens.

Not until you catch it in the act and can tell us when and what is going on at the time.
