Hi there, I've got an issue where my 75 gallon gas hot water heater (AO Smith) will ignite, wait about 5 seconds, and then turn off. It does this about 3 times and then shuts off with an error code. A few hours later, it will repeat this cycle indefinitely.
If I take the plate off in front of the burners and blow a fan in there while it tries to fire up, voila! it stays lit and is fine.
My heater is in my basement which is open and presumably well ventilated.
Does anyone know what the issue is and what I can do about it?
Thanks!

Most likely a venting issue, vacuum issue, etc.

yeah.. most gas safety devices are designed to not let it fire up. a blocked vent safety will shut it down. when you open the door below it must give the safety the impression that it is drafting..
