disposal/sink water backing up into dishwasher
Author: Bharris81 (KS)

Our dishwasher has been filling with water over the course of many months. It doesn't happen when the dishwasher runs, that works properly. It is happening when we run water through the disposal and sink for periods of time. We had a repair technician out and they determined it could have been a bad pump so it was replaced. However it kept happening. We thought it could be a clog in the line so we had a plumber come and snake the line. It is still happening. We determined then that it was the drain hose from the sink to the disposal(we don't have an air gap), and that it was too low so the water wasn't syphoning properly. Well that has been corrected and it is still happening. I am out of options or thoughts as to how to fix this. I don't want to pay another plumber to come out to not fix the problem again so I am hoping to get some solutions here. Please Help! We have 2 small children so I am constantly running the water to rinse things and then run the dishwasher. Draining it everyday is getting very annoying.
Thanks!

if the DW drain hose is looped up so the top touches the bottom of the countertop, then the law of physics will not allow water draining from the sink to back into the DW. unless the sink is filled to overflowing..

Most dishwashers have a check valve at the pump outlet to prevent water from coming back into the dishwasher. It also sounds like the drain hose is still not high enough.

ditto

integral 'rubber blabber' check AND no high loop

The drain hose is at the top of the sink. So either physics is out of whack or their is another problem. Could there be an issue with the disposal?

Could there be an issue with that valve? Can I fix that?

most likely the 'valve' is located inside the discharge hose at the pump discharge

order a 'factory replacement' part (OEM)

Was it working one day (draining) and the next day it stopped draining?

I replaced a garbage disposer last year, and the next thing I know dishwasher not draining anymore. Turned out I did the stupidest thing which was forgetting to remove the dishwasher hose connection knock out seal. The water was not even making into the disposer body. You see water shooting into the disposer as it drains?
