I am trying to decide if I should replace my tank water heater with a tankless system. I live in a mobile home in North Carolina. I have never tested the temp. of my water from the well so I have no idea what it is. There are 3 living in our household. Two adults and an 11 year old. Our hotwater demand is usually showers in the morning, dishwasher a couple of times a week and washing clothes on the weekend. Occasionally the dishwasher and washer may run at the same time but not often. Most of the reviews that I have read are on gas hotwater heaters but we are totally electric. We do have heavy iron in our water which requires a treatment system.
So, I'm looking for some advice on if a tankless system would be a good fit or if the tankless hype is just that... hype. Appreciate any input, especially from other tankless users on your experiences.

That would be a big "NO" for electric tankless.

If you are the least bit handy, you can perform all the maintenance needed on an electric water heater (even replacement of thermostats and elements) but it will cost more to operate than a tankless. A tankless will cost less to operate (gas or electric) but not too many h/o will perform the ANNUAL maintenance required as per manufacturers instructions.

If you have no gas and would use an electric tankless, with hard water, then no you need to stay with a tank type heater.

Look at some of the electrical requirements for electric tankless. The annual savings of a tankless over a tank type heater, might be $20. It takes a certain amount of power to raise the water to a usable temperature, whether you are using it as it's made, or storing it. The slight savings comes from no standby losses. Stick with a tank-type heater. Your neighbors will appreciate not having a brown-out every time you use hot water.(just kidding)

Your "mobile home" does NOT have the electrical capacity to operate a properly sized electric tankless heater. stay with the tank type.

And like was mentioned, Tankless is a Maintenance Headache, if you don't do the maintenance. Also try to filter out the iron.
