Tub Spout installed on Plastic Pipe
Author: mstroffolino (GA)

Hello,

I have a situation where I'm installing a new tub spout onto a Plastic water pipe. There is a male plastic threaded connection on the 3 inch piece of plastic pipe sticking through the wall.

Here is my issue: when I install the tub spout I cannot get the spout tight enough to be in the correct direction (pointing down). I am concerned because it's plastic pipe if I try forcing it too tight to get the extra turns it will crack the plastic pipe. It doesn't seem possible to replace the plastic pipe with copper or iron as the tub surround is already in place and it seems to be plastic pipe all the way up to the faucet. The spout will also have a stopper for a shower install.

This is an upstairs bathroom and I do not see any access to these pipes without cutting the below ceiling (which is what I am trying to avoid).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

try putting 6-7 wraps of good teflon tape on the adapter. that should make it so you don't have to turn it so many revolutions to make it water tight .

Plastic pipe is not suppose to be used down to the spout when there is also a showerhead. The pipe restricts the water and it can back up and come out of the showerhead when you are using the spout to fill the tub.
As Packy said you can add a few wraps of Teflon or you could use a bit of pipe dope, that'll lubricate the threads and let you tighten the spout a bit further.

Is the plastic ips, if it is cut it as close to the wall as you can and PVC glue a coupling with the proper size nipple to fit up the spout. You can get PVC couplings that are half slip and the other half ips.
