I am in the process of changing out my mobile home shower drain...got it out from the top without a lot of problems, just a little bit of fuss. my question is, what is this metal ring in this picture?

Could be a bezel. Could be a threaded capture ring. What ever it is, take it with you. If you know the manufacturer of your shower, better yet.

shoot seems like to get it out, it has to come out from the bottom of the trailer. its too big to fit through the hole.
Here is what the drain itself looks like.

There is NO WAY a round item could come through the round hole it seals against. It HAS to come out through the bottom and it appears that you need a special drain since most do NOT have a 1 1/2" thread for a tailpiece.

Anyway to turn this from a mobile home setup into a more traditional setup?

if you can't get under then you have to cut the floor, change the pipe to accomodate a conventional shower, repair the floor (doesn't need to be fussy as it is under the shower) and install the new shower unit.

I can get from underneath. Just wondering if it's more trouble than it's worth to go traditional or just buy one like this again.
