 High Water Pessure
Author: Leighm (CA)

Hi, my apartment was re-piped and now the water pressure is extremely strong, I run out of hot water long before I'm done washing my hair. The new shower hardware no longer has a hot and cold, it's a handle you turn clockwise-on/counter clockwise-off for heat/water pressure, and the shower head is very simple and has no controls. In order to get a comfortable water temp I have to turn the handle all the way up and the water pressure increases as its turned up. I'm hopeful if I replace the shower head with one that has controls that it will allow me to decrease the water pressure via the shower head when the main control is turned up to get hot water. I don't want to replace the shower head if it's not going to give me control over the water pressure, do you think the new shower head will take care of the problem?
Thanks!

You may have a couple of issues going on. Running out of hot water should have nothing to do with pressure. You may need maintenance to have a look at your water heater operation. The pressure at the shower head could simply be controlled by the addition of a flow restrictor (although most heads already have them). Your faucet description seems to indicate that you have individual control over pressure and temperature but a photo would help us clarify that.

There are volume controls that screw between the shower arm and shower head to reduce the flow, but for safety, and other situations, they do NOT turn the water all the way off.

What you describe is used to adjust the flow not to turn the shower off. Your handle control is for that purpose.

My first thought is that something was messed up during the repiping of your apartment building, and ALL your neighbors should have this problem. Have you asked them? Especially the neighbor who may have their shower on the other side of the wall from your shower? I'm betting there is nothing you can do inside your shower to fix the problem, unless the temperature regulating valve inside your shower faucet has failed.

Are there comparable problems at the kitchen sink or elsewhere in your apartment?

The pressure in both Hot & Cold should be identical. If its not, then the line which would be having more pressure would simply water away in the line with lesser pressure. Which may lead to more wastages or water as well as energy. Kindly check if this is the case!
