sewer gas smell from vanity sink
Author: Frustrated (PA)

We often have occasional sewer gas smell coming from our Master Bathroom sink since the total restoration of our home after a house fire. Due to the heavy smoke damage, the entire home was gutted to the studs. The 2 cast iron sewer mains were replaced w/ PVC and all toilets, showers, tubs and sinks were replaced. The ONLY area we are having this problem with is on it's own sewer main. The restoration company sent their plumbers out 3 times after we complained of the smell. Their solution was to install a 'mechanical vent' under the vanity. This has alleviated the gurgling sound we heard from the sink and shower stall every time the commode was flushed, but we still get the smell whenever we run water into the sink.
They claim that they 'have done their best' to fix the problem...I don't think so. What thoughts do you have to solve this issue?

call the plumbing inspector. the job did have a plumbing permit pulled and subsequent inspections??
gurgling is a sure sign of either a partial stoppage or non-existing plumbing vent.

Have a pic from under the sink and now I can't figure out how to post it!!! Technology-challenged, I am! smiling smiley
Well, one thing I can see is that the top opening of the "STUDOR Redi-vent" is on the same level as the drain opening @ bottom of the sink. It looks like LESS than 4" (closer to 3"winking smiley from the horizontal drain pipe to the bottom of the redi-vent (screw in?).
NOTE: An American Standard 'Champion' toilet was installed in that bathroom. We notice a much more 'intense flush' than our previous Kohler. Could this possibly be the culprit of this entire issue w/ smell from sink? Your comments are much appreciated!
