I hired a plumber to fix a cast iron drain pipe from a bathroom sink. It had broken off from the main drain which is cast iron. They placed a pvc pipe in the cast iron opening and kind of taped around it with a black tar tape? Is this the proper way to repair this? I don't believe there is a rubber bushing as I have searched online.

If they used either tar , tape , or a combination of the 2 ,it is not a proper repair.

We have absolutely no idea what you are trying to describe so a photo would be an immense help.

It was not repaired properly and has been fixed by a plumber using the rubber donut. Thanks for your replies. Had to get it taken care of asap so we could put the drywall back.
