 Wall Mount Toilet Draining
Author: SMaud (MD)

Would like to move the location of existing toilet and replace it with a wall unit. The direction the joists run are an issue. Can the pipes be run in the wall instead?

Wall Hung Toilets are usually attached to a cast iron carrier mounded behind the wall studs. Planning and installation requires engineering before hand. This is most important when performing a rehab project like yours.

Thanks for the response - we've got the wall mount portion covered. It's the pipes we're wondering if we can run behind the walls rather than in the floor.

What do you mean by "we have the wall mount part covered"? The wall mount "part" IS the pipes, etc., and they cannot be installed outside the wall without having another wall built around them.

Sorry, my misunderstanding. I've had some other advise on another forum which said the waste pipe could be run through the wall if the wall wasn't load bearing and if it were widened. Does anyone have any thoughts or comments on this option, especially when it comes to code and the good functioning of the toilet, and lastly from a maintenance/repair perspective?

A horizontal toilet carrier is a "large fitting" and requires a very good connection to the floor to keep it steady. MOST homes do NOT have a floor suitable for that purpose, unless it is a concrete slab.

Awesome new point AJ! But how would it be any different then running the pipe in a bulk head? Surely the stability factor is the same?

you are looking at one of these (or similar) to run the drain sideways.

a pipe in a bulkhead does NOT have to support a toilet and the person sitting on it.

AND, it has to be securely anchored against ANY movement.

most mfgrs specify: anchor to concrete floor with 1/2" or larger bolts
