 what type of well pump?
Author: kpc2912 (NC)

Every picture I have seen of a well cap does not look like mine. I will need to replace the pump very soon. The top of the well casing sticking out of the ground has a 1/2 inch capped pvc pipe sticking out about4 inches. From the middle is a 1 inch pvc pipe that goes up, then a 90 to the right, a gate valve, then another 90 back into the ground. I thought the supply line went to a pittless adapter and ran below the frost line. How do I go about getting this off correctly. Is it as simple as removing the nuts on the top? Any advice would be helpful. This is a 30 foot well so I assume it is a submersible deep well pump. I do not have a pump above ground, only a pressure tank under the house.

That doesn't seem to be a description of a normal well terminal. Any way you can post a photo?

I have a picture but don't know how to post it.
There is not a simple upload image feature like on other websites.
Not computer savy and have no idea how to do it.

The 1/2" pipe is an air vent, there should be tiny slots in the side of the pipe to allow air to enter the well as the water level is drawn down.
Just loosen the 4 taps, but don't completely remove them, you can then pry the well seal free from the casing.
Technically there shouldn't be a valve at the well head, because if you turn it off the pump will continue to run because the water can't reach the pressure switch @ the expansion tank under the house.
There are very few wells in NC that use a pitless adapter, usually the ones that do use a pitless are dug by diggers from Virginia where they are more common.

Ahhh, so it's a sanitary well seal. Thanks for the info NCP. The pump discharge is exposed to the elements- something you can get away with farther south. Did you have issues with this type of installation last winter with the polar vortexes?

About the only time I have to thaw a well head is when the mice or ground squirrels destroy the insulation.
Code requires a concrete well cover, with 12" of insulation surrounding the piping. It usually takes 2 or 3 days of zero degree temps before they start freezing if properly insulated.

So the well terminal is in a pit? Wouldn't a pitless adapter be so much easier or is the tank situated alongside the well?

The well terminal is surrounded by a 24" wide ,36" tall concrete enclosure with removable lid. The pressure tank can be buried next to the well, or preferably placed in the home's basement or crawlspace .
