the shower diverter (my pals at American No-Standards) in our shower has failed.
I have the new part.
But I have been unable to remove the old. The piece with the thread is stuck in the spout. It's cheap plastic but I can't unscrew or crack it, thus far, without the risk of the spout itself.
And the cap on the stem won't unscrew either. Tried holding the stem with a pliers, WD40, blah, blah, blah.
Anyone have an idea for loosening ether or both, that is not likely to ruin the spout?

If the plunger is plastic and you need to get that to stop rotating, heat a straight blade screwdriver tip really hot and stab it into the bottom of the plunger. This will melt into the plunger and give you a handle to hold it.

ended up drilling the old bits out and hoped that I wouldn't ruin the spout, but alas....
AS is replacing the part as a "courtesy". Perhaps its time for a redesign.
I won't be buying AS again.

It is no different than any other diverter spout. I would NEVER waste even 5 minutes trying to repair one.
