Immediate Help with Sewage Ejector Pump
Author: msiddiqui (NY)

Hi, I had a plumber install a sewage ejector pump in the basement. I have the following questions -
Is the pump supposed to empty all from the basin? right now it only empties 3 inches from top.
Plumber made a hole in the discharge pipe saying that this is for air but it throws water back in the basin?
I have two inlets into basin. Does the inlets have to be above the pump level? One of my inlets is almost on the ground.
Plumber when making holes for the inlets he basically cut out huge portion of basin and the water goes outside of the basin into the pit. Is this right?

It should empty to about 3" from the BOTTOM
It should only be a small hole but is necessary
The inlets SHOULD be above the pump level, but it really depends on what the are for.
He should NOT have "made holes for the inlets". They should have been in the basin and he should have connected the pipes TO THEM. IF he had to make holes, he should have secured the proper adapters over them for the pipe to connect to.
You may have had a "hack" rather than a plumber doing the installation.

The two inlets - one for sink and the other for toilet. I see that the toilet inlet is very close to the bottom of the basin.
Are you saying the inlets must be above the top of pump? Please respond
Thanks

any inlets the plumber made should be no lower than the factory inlet.
what did the inspector have to say?

Any inlets the plumber made should be sealed to the receptor and NOT allow any water to leave the receptor.

Sounds like the ONLY thing he right was drill the hole in the discharge line.

Yes, because if the toilet is NOT vented, which is a possibility, then it will not flush if the water is above its pipe. But, even if it is vented, water in the pipe will prevent proper flushing. The inlets SHOULD have been installed by the manufacturer before it was sold. How about a photo of the basin?

Assuming it is the correct size.

a sewage ejector pump is supposed to be a sealed system other than the pipes coming in and out (and the pump electrical cord). the system in our basement has 2 inch dedicated vent pipe. the exit pipe should have an in-line check valve to stop flow back into the basin from the exit pipe. there should be nothing escaping from that system except what is pumped up and out of the exit pipe.

you said you have lots of visible water in the pit. that sounds totally wrong. are you seeing visible sewage in the pit? did the guy not put the lid on the basin? as you describe it, there would be accompanying odor from sewage which is wrong.

a picture would help.
