We remodeled our house about a year ago. The floor is a concrete slab type. We put in two new bath tubs which required moving the drains to fit the new outlets from the new tubs. I hired a plumber who cut the slab, dug a short new trench, and laid new pipe. While it was all open I asked when he was going to put in the concrete to fill the trench. He told me that he was not going to because there had to be access to the new pipe and to cover with concrete would be a code violation. It sounded weird to me but...what do I know. I told him to fill the trench with sand. Anyway, I now notice a smell- kind of earthy in one of the bathrooms that has a sink outlet cut into the wall. The area around the sink outlet is slightly open becaus the pipe was cut through marble on the wall.
I got permits but the tub covered the trenches before the inspector looked at the rough in.
Did the plumber mess up? Should this have been concreted over? I am worried now about mold etc.
Thanks,

the inspector passed the job even though the pipes were covered ?
if you have a dank smell coming up thru the floor then something was done wrong.
