Can a bad gas valve cause high Boiler water pressure?
Author: endeavour (NY)

My system is single zone gas fired water boiler. It’s been making loud noise for the past 2 weeks or so. We just figured out it was due to bad gas valve. I am going to get the gas valve replaced this weekend.

Now ever since this gas valve problem has started, the water pressure has been staying high when the boiler is running (its at 12psi when off and stays there). When the boiler is running the pressure goes to 30psi and triggers the relief valve somewhere around 170F. Could this be because of the bad gas valve or this is entirely different problem? I don't see how gas valve could affect the pressure in the system. Any thoughts?

No relationship whatever. You need to check your expansion tank. It either needs air or replacement.

Your relief valve should NOT have a temperature function so it is probably just the 30 psi causing the discharge. Your expansion tank is not functioning.
