 Water Pressure Regulator Replacement
Author: AfghanVet (GA)

Hello,

I had a pretty heavy leak from my water pressure regulator. I went and purchased a new one and I am trying to reinstall it now. The components on hand are the regulator body itself, a rubber washer-like grommet with a filter, another rubber washer-like grommet and something like a rubber o-ring. Whenever I install the regulator, the whole thing free spins and it leaks like a sieve. I've gotten the fittings as tight as I feel comfortable without damaging the washer or the brass threads.

Thanks in advance,
Richard

I think I figured out the problem. I think the threads on the new unit are incompatible with current pipe structure and its threads. I used some thread tape and put the old one back on and she's holding with no leaks, we shall see how long that lasts.

When replacing a PRV, I suggest getting the same brand, and the same model number if it is still available. This way, it should be a direct replacement. Brands can vary in size and threading.

It is unclear why your old one started leaking in the first place.

If you install a new PRV, choose the one that has Unions on both ends fo the valve. You may have shot yourself in the foot by connecting threads that don't match. Send a photo for more complete advice. Place a measuring tape next to the pipe when you photograph to all for clarity in response.
