replacing tub/shower combo with shower pan - do i have to change drainage??
Author: lsierra (TN)

hi...my first question here... hoping for a quick answer! i've removed the shower/tub combo and had a plumber come in to move the faucet up for the new shower handle. He knew what my plans are and never said anything about having to change the drainage plumbing... but when i went to a big box store, the guy there said i have to change it all. help?? can i just put my pan onto the existing drain and install walls? do i have to replumb everything?? thanks!

by code the shower drain must be 2 inch. sadly tub drains are only 1 1/2 inch.
if you can easily increase the size to 2 inch then do it. if it is extremely difficult than just keep what you have. code limits shower heads to 2.5 gallons per minute. you should be OK. if you put multiple heads or body sprays then you will be in trouble.
as for drain location, the existing trap will have to be moved almost a foot.
a fiberglass pan can be installed like this one or you can have a custom tile job.

Thanks so much for reply...
Why would the trap have to be moved a foot?

because the trap is not located under the drain hole in the tub. it is in the wall under the shower valve.

Did you ask the plumber for any insight/advice? When the h/o becomes their own GC and the plumber is relegated to a subcontractor, it is up to the GC to run the job. If that was the case in your situation, he obviously knew the needed change, but if you never pointed that out, he moved the faucet as instructed and left it at that.

No, i didn't ask for specific advice on that, as i thought i could just drop the shower pan in place and attach existing drain pipe. i didn't know so much more needed to be changed. i have the plumber coming shortly to reconfigure - i will be sure to ask now! thanks!

Listen to your plumber and heed his advice. That is why you call a plumber.
