Rusting kitchen sinks in an apartment complex
Author: richard904 (MA)

I live now in a 200 apartment complex in Santa Barbara. The apartments have a large double drop in white cast iron sink. It doesn't look like a cheap sink. The complex was built in 2009, so we are talking about six years of age. My sink is now shedding rust into the cabinet underneath from the front and rear edge. Nothing shows on top. The sinks work fine. The apartment complex management told me that there are a few sinks with this problem. This would indicate an installation problem. They have not figured out a solution short of replacing the sinks. I am also sure they may not know the brand of the sink. What other options short of replacement are available?

I'd re-install it with silicone under the rim.

Using a flashlight, look on the underside of the sink. The manufacturers name should be cast on the sink. It may possibly be an American Standard Americast sink.

There seems to be something stamped on the right side, but I cannot make it out. I will have to find a way to enhance what is stamped so I can read it.

I used my flashlight and took another look. There is really a lot of rust in back. If the sink is removed, then it appears they will have to make a decision whether to save it or replace it. It is a two person job even to remove the sink to do anything to it, so it is expensive to start with. Parenthetically, if the sink structurally fails and falls into the opening and takes the water supply pipes with it, then since I am on the third floor of an expensive apartment, there will be real damage below also.

water is getting UNDER the lip of the drop in sink because it was NOT properly caulked/sealed originally

repair:

pencil mark counter around sink

remove sink

wire brush away all rust on bottom of flange and sink

apply COPIOUS caulk, plumber's putty, or silicone sealant to counter top - enough for cleanup after setting of sink to be a minor PITA

secure sink with any 'clips'

voila, no more rust

"bernabeu" I accept what you say. I was thinking that someone knew a "miracle spray" that would penetrate and set the rust and prevent further rusting, and this could all be done by not removing the sink.

After I had done this posting I finally thought about how different problems like this are to a homeowner vs. a real estate entity that owns and manages a large complex of apartments. The homeowner has to go into their savings account and pay the cost of mitigating such a problem. The real estate entity simply amortizes the cost by raising rents which they can certainly do out here!

It shouldn't be a 2 person job to R&R the sink. If it was mine and I wanted to reuse it, I would pull it out, scrape and wire wheel the rusty areas and then spray a rubberized undercoating on it.

Richard,

a heavy ci sink requiring two people is worth saving and PROPERLY installing

or

remove and replace with modern junk

either way one must remove and replace

ps. I want .5% of the gross after you market your 'miracle fixall aerosol'
