New House - No P trap (Vent Trap) under the bathroom sink
Author: JustNutsandBolts (NJ)

Here is the image: [imgur.com]

Can I just install one in there without tearing up the wall? Like I have shown in the picture?

This was an REO property and yes it did come up in the home inspection.
I'm in Mount Laurel, NJ if anyone knows a reasonable plumber.

My other problem is the no cold water at this same bathroom but only in the shower.
That's an another post.

Thank You in advance

Not an expert but I think the diff between the s trap and p trap is mostly in the way it's vented.

Do you know what's happening inside that wall?

You DO HAVE a "P" trap, it is just a "do it yourself" version. You won't be able to connect to the pipe if you cut it there. A plumber would cut it at the wall and redo it with pipe and fittings, then install a "P" trap at the sink.

Hj if that pipe enters the wall and turns straight down its an S trap, if there's a sani-tee in the wall so the waste heads down with a vent at the top, then it's a p-trap... My thoughts...

Edit- I'd unscrew that black abs joint right before the wall and shine a flashlight in the pipe to determine if it's vented before it drops down. Plus by using that joint you could fix it up without cutting any pipe..

NOW, WHAT makes you think there is a elbow inside the wall instead of a tee? No one said anything about that, and the person ALSO does not know what is there.

I'm just answering the original question, and title of his post.

If the vent is there for sure then his pic already shows a p-trap. All I'm saying is no one can confirm with 100% certainty if it's a p or s trap without confirming the in-wall venting - which might easily be done with a flashlight... Unless of course that drain enters the wall then turns sideways and is intercepted by a vent from above... Which is how I piped my own bathroom at my house during a remodel...
