My container of Plumber's putty has dried out. Can it be reconstituted with water? If not water, is there anything I can use?

You can 'try' Linseed oil.

Probably simpler/cheaper to simply buy new putty.

Packy can u seal a sink drain down to the basin with silicone instead of putty successfully? As in, will it last decades?

What if you needed to remove it in the future?

It is really not worth "rescuing" but a bit of linseed oil kneaded into it may work. Or, just knewd it with your hands and the oile from your skin may rejuvenate it.

Palm329 , 100% silicone under a sink strainer will last indefinately. i have removed many that were siliconed down and with a little persuasion they will come loose.
i really can't tell you how many i have done with silicone but a can tell you i have NEVER had a leak. i can't say that for putty. especially with some of the plastic pop-up assemblies we are seeing.
