I tried to pull the shower handle off and accidentally broke off a piece of the stem. Some of it is still in the old handle and some of it is still attached to the wall. How can this be repaired? Do I HAVE to call a plumber?

You won't have to if you can remove the stem from the valve body, and replace it and the handle. Can you show a picture of what you're working with ?

I just added a photo. What do you think? I noticed the mold growing behind the handle and tried to remove it to clean. I used very little force, but this is what happened. =(

Cheap plastic stems...shame.

You'll need to turn the water off to the house, unscrew the bonnet nut and then pull the stem free from the valve body. Take the stem and handle to a plumbing supply store and see if you can find a match.

I already have a new handle, so I will just need a new stem. So I won't need any special tools? Any idea how expensive a new stem will be? Hopefully cheap!

If you have the correct handle, then you MUST also know who made the faucet, which should make getting the new stem somewhat simple. Normally, the new stem will have directions.

Please don't tell us that you just went to Home Depot and bought a handle that looked similar?
