 water spurting from lav faucet
Author: pbw (OH)

new water heater was installed a month ago. four bath rooms in the house, at only one faucet does air spurt from the hot side of lave faucet. All other hot faucets are fine, no spurting. this bath is closest to the water heater, although the kitchen is adjacent to that bath, no spurting from that faucet.
I know that when heating water hydrogen 'escapes' from the water. could this air be migrating to just that faucet? Why wouldn't that air be flushed out at a shower faucet that is being turned on first (shower is in another bath further from the water heater)? is there an air vent for a water heater similar to one that is used at a hot water boiler? Yes the house has a well & that system has been checked & found to be leak free. The softener system was serviced a week before the new water heater tank was installed. any correlation between the two?
thanking you in advance

Your water softener is causing the anode rod in the hot water tank to be destroyed. The anode sacrifices itself to save the tank, but it can only survive for so long before it is spent and the tank begins to degrade. If you can turn down the softener to increase the water's hardness slightly, you will extend the life of the tank, and maybe the gas issue will subside as well.

As I stated, the water heater is only a month old, does the anode rod decay that fast? Why isn't the resulting gas showing up in other faucets which are opened first?
