 Acid Neutralizer Selection
Author: laperry (NH)

Hi All,
I am helping my sister figure out what to use as an acid neutralizer at her new (to her) home!

My best guess based on research is a 2.5 cubic foot 100% calcite non-backwashing unit. However-it is hard to get a really consistent straight answer from sellers online (and they are the sources for most of the info!)

Details:
Water pH: 6.2
Household size: 5-7
Bathrooms: 3
Staining: Blue/green on faucets
Water Pump flow rate: Unknown (can find out)
Hardness: 22 mg/L
Iron: .079 mg/L (that's 79 ppm?)
Location: Central NH
Water source: Well
Septic: tank/leech field

Thank you so much for any help and advice!! They are tight on cash and doing a lot of work themselves, so we're all pulling together to help them make the safest and healthiest home they can!

That will be a good choice size-wise (2 1/2 cu. ft) but I would not install an upflow (non-backwashing) neutralizer. There is too much chance for cementing and an automatic downflow is not that much more expense. Also, make sure that your tank has a dome plug on it for easy adding of calcite.

Thank you for your advice! Any idea why mid atlantic water would be so pro-non-backwashing? Is this a common divide or are people pretty much all of the opinion that the backwashing ones are best?

A 2 1/2 cu ft neutralizer is just too big a tank for upflow service. Very likely that it will cement over. A 3/4 or 1 cu ft tank might be okay on upflow but your pH demands a larger tank.
