 Noisy toilet
Author: gmum (IL)

American Standard Champion 4

When you sit on the stool PRIOR to flushing, I am getting a "drip drip" sound which I presume is water into the cast iron drain below. After flushing the toilet, it gradually continues for about 30 minutes until its quiet again.

Its the same noise I would hear after a flush if I simply walked up to the toilet and flushed without sitting on it.

The toilet is not refilling on its own though, which I normally would associate with something like this. The toilet uses a gasket instead of a traditional flapper. I have changed the gasket with no effect. The water level is about an 1" below the overfill as directed.

What is likely occurring?

Is the toilet sitting rock solid ? The trap is filled to the brim with water and any movement whatsoever will cause some of the water in the trap to drip down into the drain pipe.

Also, anything the person seated "adds" to the bowl, will cause it to flow into the drain.

thanks both for pointing that out... I was certainly thinking along those lines but I didn't know if the trap would be right at the brim.

If the dripping is as pronounced as it is... I suppose its hitting porcelain rather than cast iron a foot below. The cast should be silent no?

If the overflowing trap isn't it, maybe I should look to the donut between the tank and bowl or the flush valve itself.........
