I NEED TO REPLACE THE WASHERS IN MY TUB FAUCET. THE NUT HOLDING THE STEM IS RECESSED 2" IN A METAL DECORATIVE TUBE. CAN I REMOVE THE TUBE( IT SEEMS PRETTY SOLID) OR DO I NEED A DEEP SOCKET TO REMOVE THE NUTS?

even with the tube removed it is sometimes difficult to get a wrench on that big nut.

You need to find a large 1/2" drive socket, probably about 15/16", that just fits into the chrome tube. Insert it and then use pliers to grab the tube AND socket so you can unscrew it. Do NOT try to do it without the socket because you will just distort the tub and make it grab the thread tighter. Once that is off, you can use a deep socket, or faucet wrench to remove the stem.

Can you post a photo of the faucet so that we can give you better advice?
