Greetings,
Would anyone know of any reason my hot water heater (11 year BradfordWhite gas) would fire off when I run a cold tap for just a short length of time? If I am filling a pail at the sink it will start after about a gallon (?) but for instance not when the toilet is flushed. Its been happening for some time.......... I thought it was just coincidence at first. I'm thinking not.
Thanks for consideration.

we would have to be there and observe it, because there is no "normal" interaction between running the faucet and turning on the heater.

The only way cold water running would affect a water heater is if you have a cross connection and hot water is being used at the same time. Gas hot water heaters don't have an upper thermostat, so I can't see a dip tube issue being relevant.

Using the cold tap, has NOTHING to do with water flowing through the tank, and even if it did there would have to be a fairly large/long flow to activate an electric heater's upper thermostat.
