We need to know what regulations there if, any for installing a bathroon fan / vent in Franklinton NC. We have a bathroom on the second floor that does not have a vent.In planning to remedy this problem,we are wondering if we can install the fan in a wall with the pipe going directly outside rather than the ceiing? It would be far less efficient to install a ceiling vent fan, however we need to know if are there specific directives that need to followed for wall placement etc in order to comply with code.?

as far as i know, the code says you need a vent fan in the room it does not say where in the room it has to be.

I can't think of a good reason not to install it in the wall as long as is not with in reach of kids, peoples long hair etc. try to use solid galvi pipe instead of the corrugated when ever possible. I got a panasonic that is moisture and motion activated. really cool

There might be a code requirement, for a minimum distance between the exterior vent opening and any opening into the building, such as an operable window or door. In CA, the vent needs to be at least 3' from a building opening and a minimum 3' from a property line.

You would use a "through the wall fan", which has a grill on both sides.
