 Gas shut off valve location
Author: pbr2424 (NH)

Does a shut off valve for a gas boiler have to be located within 6 feet of the appliance. I am using NFPA 54. 9.6.4.1 say within 6 feet except for 9.6.4.2 which are serving vented appliances and 9.6.4.3 which pertains to manifolds.

I read the section as saying within 6 feet except for 9.6.4.2 and 9.6.4.3 which are not a gas boiler.

Any ideas about how that reads.

Thank you

Peter Beal

Why CAN'T you put it right near the boiler, which would be the normal location?

MA has its own gas code. i believe the code says "in the same room".
the reality is (as hj says) why not put it where we all put it?

accessable and visable in the case of a boiler or furnace.
in the case of cook stove, the gas cock is neither.
you have to slide the stove out a foot or so and lay on your belly on the countertop. then while your helper is holding your feet, you reach down to turn off the gas.
couple of months ago i installed a wolf brand kitchen stove. it had 6 burners and 2 ovens. it took 2 people to slide it in and out. how accessable is the gas valve on that?? not very...

Thanks you for your reply. I would put it next to the appliance but I am not in control of the situation.

normally, the gas valve is where you can operate it while being AT the appliance. 8 feet away, might mean it has to be searched for in an emergency.

if you are pulling the gas permit, you better be in control !!

Normally on a fireplace log lighter the valve needs to be within arms reach...4 ft or less is recommended. So I would think that safety would require a simular distance for a boiler. I could be wrong and someone will correct me if I am...
