Hello, I live in a fairly new home (built 8yrs ago) and for the last 7yrs I was able to flush the toilet, do laundry, dishes etc....and still be able to take a shower and I would never have a problem with my shower getting hot or cold. For the past 6-8 months if someone is doing a laundry (cold water) my shower would lose pressure and would receive cold water only for the hole duration that the washer would be filling. Now if I am doing a cold water wash, shouldn't my shower get hot...not cold? I am confused as to what happened in the last year to cause this problem?

things I have checked:
The hot water works in the whole house but if I do a cold water wash, all of the sinks (kitchen and two bathrooms) as well as the shower receive only cold water even with only the hot water tap turned on. Once the washer is done filling with cold water, then all of the taps and shower start to receive the hot water again. I know the wash is not using any hot water as I have the hot water valve for the washer turned off as we only use cold water for laundry. I'm not sure what else I can try as we haven't done anything differently in the 8yrs that we have been here.

Your cold water pressure and volume should be checked at the source, beginning with the meter. Remember that cold water from the main supplies both the hot water heater and cold requirements. I would also check every zone valves to be sure they are fully opened.

If you have a water softener or pressure regulating valve either one could cause those symptoms if they have gone bad.
