Help! I used petroleum sealant on pvc drain!
Author: Davemiller (VA)

To make a long story short, I used the yellow pipe dope (petroleum based sealant) on a pvc to cast iron threaded connection for a tub drain in the wall. How long can I expect it to last till the pvz degrades and it leaks?

If the dope is NOT rated for use on PVC, I have seen it happen in a few weeks.

What happened? did the pvc just get brittle or did it really dissolve and fall apart?
I guess that was the last thing I wanted to hear, since the tub is in already. I haven't started tiling the surround yet...

It dissolves it and softens it. Check the can and see what it says about PVC piping.

Many decades ago I used Loctite 242 on a plastic (nylon) machine screw and tightened it and the next day I found the screw in two pieces. Did not think to check compatibility.

That said, it only softens the surface layer and if the PVC threads are female it will likely never leak. Tightening the joint would have squeezed most of the dope out and there will only be a very thin layer of dope on the PVC threads. Since this is not a pressure application I would feel comfortable leaving the joint as it is if it is not leaking now. If PVC threads are male I would redo the joint.
