 Snake use method?
Author: Dave4c (WI)

I have a rural (septic system) home in northern Wisconsin.
Are there right and wrong ways to use a snake for cleaning drains? (Other than twisting in the correct direction?)
Better or best types of snakes for homeowner?
When is it time to call a professional?
What are the limitations that a professional will run into?
All drains are draining currently, but laundry drain seems a little slow (and gurgles in nearby sink).

Are there right and wrong ways to use a snake for cleaning drains? (Other than twisting in the correct direction?)
-Anything other than the correct way to operate an auger is ineffective and usually dangerous.

Better or best types of snakes for homeowner?
-If you want professional results, your need at least low end professional equipment. The hand crank, drill operated, and steel tapes are all wastes of time and money.

When is it time to call a professional?
-When you know that there is a problem that is beyond your ability, go ahead and call. If you have time to play with it and don't mind getting dirty, give it a whirl and see what you can do.

What are the limitations that a professional will run into?
-Nothing that a lot of money can't fix. The typical issues that I have seen that really hinder things are: spots that need a moving crew to get to; a drip that someone 'fixes' with silicone, gray tape, and epoxy putty; unsafe working conditions; no electrical power.

All drains are draining currently, but laundry drain seems a little slow (and gurgles in nearby sink).
- It could be a lot of things, but a restricted drain that the sink and laundry share is the most likely scenario. It could be a septic tank getting full as well, or a problem with the gray water(if your system is split)

use a well maintained rental snake from your local homecenter. make sure it is the proper size for the line you are cleaning and follow the manufacturers instructions for use.

laundry lines are usually the biggest pain in the rear... especially if it is a cast iron or galvanized pipe. pvc or abs pipe is much simpler to snake and usually require less maintenance overall.

Are you planning on snaking the inside of your house or outside to your septic system? Snaking any waste line can have its dangerous limitations. Human Waste is just one of the dangers to consider. Is your Water Drain connected to the septic system or does it empty outside into an underground trench?

Best Wishes
