Install bathroom in attached garage for in-law apt
Author: senseisandan3 (MA)

Hello,

We are buying a house in Massachusetts. We plan on adding a in-law apt to the garage which is attached to the house. It's atttached to the basement, which is partly above grade and partly below since the house is built on a slope. Will we face any issues adding a bathroom? Or is it ALWAYS possible to add one no matter what? The house currently has 2.5 bathrooms already. 2 upstairs and 1 half bathroom downstairs. Both the kitchen annd half bathroom are located in the middle of the house.

Here is a link to a picture of the house so you can see how the garage is situated.

Thanks!

anyTHING is possible if you have enough money. Where the garage is is less important than where the sewer is because that will determine a lot about how much it will cost.

i hope you understand that in massachusetts you can not perform plumbing unless you hold a valid plumbers license. even in your own home...
best to contact a local licensed plumber to have your questions answered and to get an estimate.

Remember a sleeping room cannot open directly off a garage. Meaning one cannot walk out of a garage into a room used for sleeping. Also emergency access is needed for one thin an operable window of at least 5.7 sq ft not more than 44 inches off the floor etc.

I think he intends to MAKE the garage a sleeping room, not add one to it.

Yes, I'm aware of that. I will have a plumber do the work.

In that case, HE will do the evaluation to tell you what it will cost to do it.

In that case, HE will do the evaluation to tell you what it will cost to do it. All you have to do is tell him what you want and where you want it, he will do the rest.
