 tub drain and trap
Author: peter123 (NY)

I have an old tub I'm replacing. The trap is copper and it takes 1-1/4" waste pipe. The old waste pipe was attached to the trap by a slip join nut and washer. My new drain is 1-1/2" PVC. What's my best option to connect the tow? I can't really remove the trap due to inaccessibility. The old copper waste pipe is broken and thrown away, so what I have now is the trap, which looks ok, and a 1-1/2" PVC waste pipe. Any advice would be appreciated.

The drain needs to be replaced with 1.5" line. You would be best served by getting a licensed plumber on site to assess the situation and see what can be done. If it is repaired improperly, you run a very good chance of causing a lot of property damage from the water that will be leaking.

i have seen old tubs connected with a 1 3/8 tub waste but never with 1 1/4 inch..
the trap must be a drum trap if you can't see it right below the tub.
get us a photo of what you have.

You must have had an old leg tub with a 1 3/8" drain. The new drain should connect to the same pipe with a different slip nut.

He is saying the drain line is smaller than the tub waste now. I have never seen a waste and overflow reduced down. If an overflow the same size as the old one could be found, you could reconnect it. Check our sponsor's site here [www.plumbingsupply.com]

Smaller waste and overflows, meaning 1 3/8" are for LEG TUBS, not modern ones, but they still connected to a 1 1/2" drain line.
