 Ice maker line mending
Author: sum (FL)

I have a plastic hose for the ice maker line.

The OD is about 1/4", ID about 1/8". I have two segments. One runs from the supply valve through the bottom of a few cabinets to the back of the range, the other runs from there through another set of cabinets to the refrigerator. I found this contraption behind the range.

Where the two connect there is a compression coupling, not 1/4", I think 1/8". But it uses a plastic ferrule and is a part missing?

I can't tell whether what I have is a 1/4" OD x 1/8" Brass Male NPT Compression Connector, or is it an incomplete 1/8" Brass Compression Coupling?

It looks like a ΒΌ" union that's missing one of the nuts.

if it were me, i would replace the whole piece of tubing with a 1/4 inch stainless flex supply.
they are made up to 25 feet long.

one end goes on the fridge and the other on the shutoff.

I had a 1/4" nut and it was too big.

take the union off and turn it around to see if it fits both ways..

It has a "coarse" thread so it is a male adapter, NOT a compression coupling.

That is good to know, since I have never seen any more than 6' long, although we would have to order it online because no one here stocks one.

Bernabeu is going to have a fit over the 25 foot braided line!

Yes! I guess he will just have to keep holding on to his 25' piece of 1/4" copper.

regardless of what you HAVE, get a 1/4" "push on" coupling to make the connection.

..... or HDPE tube

F/Y/I:

my hook up is:

wall box behind fridge

Cu tube to 1/4 turn s/s valve inside adjoining cabinet

Cuno 327 filter assembly

HDPE tube to fridge IM (no dispensers)

HDPE tee off to water dispensing spigot at corner of sink (for coffee pot and 'purging' new filter elements)

HDPE = High Density Polyethylene (industrial grade stuff ordered through McMaster Carr) @ 27 cents per foot

sometimes even I settle for good instead of best (Cu tube) practice

I don't trust HDPE tubing. I have seen aged HDPE tubing used for icemaker supply crack and leak.

I periodically check it when cleaning and replace every 5-7 years anyway.

ps. the 'big box store' sells LDPE - looks and seems similar to HDPE

and both are a great appetizer for mice. Pex lined stainless braid is the best way to go, better than copper.

I guess what you are saying is that if you have a plastic line, you also need a cat.

Incidentally, while you are talking about mice, I replaced a roof last week, and removed the rotted roof sheathing, and guess what I found?

Don't know if it's a dead mouse, rat, or squrrel...the head is gone, and the body was sorta mummified.

I connected the line with a plastic push in connector.

There will not be any water passing through it though. I found the line disconnected behind the range, but since this is a rental, I have already removed the ice maker feature from the fridge. The line is capped at the fridge, the dual outlet valve behind the kitchen sink cabinet is turned off. I only connected the line back up to make sure if the tenant got curious about turning on the valve handle, that there won't be a flood coming from behind the range. That line will stay unused. I could pull it all out but I think it's good to keep just in case.

I don't remember ANYONE saying they were PEX tubes. But many of them have Latex surgical tubing for their liner.
