Chemical smell from new bathroom sink
Author: sueb (Non-US)

We recently installed a new cultured marble vanity top. When we run water into the sink, either hot or cold we get a chemical smell from the overflow pipe. We have blocked the overflow outlet and we don't get the smell. There is no smell unless water is run into the sink. Is there anything we can do to elminate this?

I'd fill the sink and let the water run down the overflow for a bit.
The smell should disappear on it's own after a little while.

A few drops of oil of peppermint down the overflow will mask the odor until it dissipates.

Any pharmacy will have SMALL 1/4 oz. bottles.

Hope you like peppermint as THAT will last for DAYS.

We used to pre-test hi-rise plumbing systems by mixing oil of peppermint with buckets of really hot water and pouring the mix down the vents on the roof. The helper/apprentice who mixed and poured was not allowed back in the building that day.

Any leak would emit the odor INSIDE the building. Real easy to find, believe it or not.

Said worker could not hide anywhere either .... for DAYS.

Though he would probably be welcome on the average city bus by the end of the night.
