 Circulation problem in multiple zones
Author: jtwilber1 (MA)

26 year old house. Forced hot water. 3 zones ( floors) . We added an additional in-law apt last year with a fourth zone. Installed by a reputable local HVAC Contractor. When Apt was empty and thermostat was OFF ( even removed) baseboards were still hot even tho circulators off.

Possible related issue. We have 3 floors\zones. 2nd and 3rd floor for years baseboards never r got warm. We've purged, replaced circulators etc. circulators run, but water does not seem to circulate well. Now we find when 2nd floor heat is ON... that the water circulates in the ZONE 4 even though the thermostat is off.

I am not a trade guy but it sure feels like there is a blockage in the actual loop. We did have the plastic pipe from mid 80's originally that was recalled. We did replace it... but did they skip the stuff they could not reach ? Could that product have failures that could impede circulation ?

Could blockages ( if there are any ) cause hot water in pipes with resistance to back flow and cause circulation in zone 4 when thermostat off ?

Every plumber so far scratches his head and never finds solutions other than replacing circulators and purging air.

HELP !!!!

A reputable HVAC company would not leave the system in that condition. Taking the time to set the zones up that don't heat, so they can be power purged will tell them if there is a blockage. As for your 4th zone, it sounds like ghost flow, and leaving out a flow check, or flow control valve can cause that. For an HVAC contractor, you need reputable and knowledgable. You only got 1/2 the criteria.

you first problem (ghost heat) is caused by a faulty flow check.
as for a blockage in the upstairs piping??? i have never seen that happen.

Check valve installed backwards somewhere causing incorrect flow?

It's probably air. Unless they're power purging, baseboards can be almost impossible to purge. A friend that is a boiler man, told me a long time ago that they don't play with them. They pump the system out, add the valves and boiler drains necessary to power purge. As he said,"How do you justify 2 men for 8 hours?" Which is what it might take, futzing around the other way. I'd suggest the OP goes to heatinghelp.com, and use the Find A Contractor page. Get the system sorted out correctly, once and for all.
