one time leak in DWV pipe
Author: harpmom21 (PA)

I had an inspection on a house for sale and while only the dishwasher was running, the inspector noted a small leak from DWV pipe in basement during mid-cycle. I tried to repeat the situation before calling a plumber, but after a full cycle, there was no leak, dampness, nothing. Is it possible this was a one time leak? Can a plumber find a leak you can't duplicate under the same circumstances? It is a cast iron pipe.

There should be evidence of a leak on the pipe or floor. If not then a plumber won't be able to find the "leak" if it's not leaking when they are there.

Or the inspector was full of something.. If the report looks too empty, it looks like they didn't do their job.

I have had many instances of "phantom" problems. In one case he wanted the 75 gallon gas water heater replaced because the top was "bulged" up, not knowing or caring that that is how A O Smith makes their larger heaters.
