 Sink not draining properly
Author: jimfale2 (CT)

My sink is not draining.

I just completed attaching my new sink to the wall drain and the water backs up.
I recently renovated my kitchen and put in new cabinets, countertops and a sink.

Thank you for your assistance.

Jim

Have a plumber/drain cleaner come take a look, I can't be sure, but it looks like you have galvanized/cast in the wall. They are notorious for corroding and trapping material in the T at the wall, and generally building up rust, grease, soap, etc. Next time you decide to renovate, consider upgrading the plumbing behind the walls while it is exposed, so that you can avoid tearing it all back out if it begins to leak.
edit- was this house in use in the recent past, or is has it been sitting for a long time?

No this is my house, and I have lived here for 15 years.
You are right I should have updated the plumbing before installing cabinets.
There was never any issue before the renvovation with the drain, therefore I think it may be because of the hight of the galvonized pipe in the wall.
I had to remove my garbage disposal, I originally tried to install that but it was too low, because the new sink is deeper than the previous and it is also bottom mounted vs. top mounted.
This is really challenging.
Thanks for feedback.

Not that you want to now of course… but you can get the drain replaced in the wall with the outlet at a lower height to accommodate your disposal. Personally, I don't care for the disposal, but some people like them… and keep their local drain cleaner in business.

you don't have the trap arm shoved too far into the drain so that it hits the back wall of the tee/elbow???

No I cut the trap arm appropriately so that it does not block the T.
It would be a big job to adjust the pipe in the wall and my new cabinets/countertops are already in place.
Thanks.

Any other ideas or recommendations?
Thank you very much!
Jim

I discovered the isssue, I believe. There is rust build up in the drain pipe, which is inhibiting the water flow. I now have a slow drain occuring.
Any suggestions on how I can remove some of the rust build-up?

Thank you.
