Replacing S trap with offset sink
Author: Learningcurve (PA)

Hi, all. I'm installing a new sink and have complications. The old sink had an S trap. I understand it's best to replace that with a P. However, the drain pipe comes from the floor, is metal, and is shaped like an inverted J. Can I still do a P? How? And what material should I use? The next complication is that the drain for the new sink will be approx. 15 inches to the right of where the drain pipe comes up from the floor. I'm a new homeowner so eager to learn but with limited experience. Any guidance on how to do this right will be much appreciated!

Starting at the floor, use PVC pipe to come up to a tee. Install the p trap at the tee horizontal and install an AAV off the vertical.

OK, thanks, I think I follow. But how do I get to PVC? Cut the metal pipe near the floor and use a flexible coupling to transition?

Ah. Didn't think of this extra complicating bit until now: The drain pipe from the floor is only 1 1/2 in. (on center) in from the wall. I figured I would notch out the back of the vanity I'm putting in to accommodate, but to fit the AAV I'll need more. Would putting in two 45-degree ells be a bad idea to get it out from the wall? At the bottom near the coupling, or just above or below the tee?

Fellow DIYer here just wanted to share a pic of a kitchen drain I did also from an unvented S-trap to a p-trap with an AAV.
